About
About My FIRE Number
FIRE calculators that show their working, run on your device and keep nothing you type.
Why we built it
Most FIRE calculators do one sum behind a form and ask for an email address. We wanted the whole family in one place, each one stating its formula and a worked example, with a chart you can read and figures you can check by hand. And we wanted them to be arithmetic you can trust rather than a sales funnel for a broker.
The calculators
- FIRE Calculator: Your FIRE number, the year you reach it and a year-by-year chart, from spending, savings and returns.
- Coast FIRE Calculator: The amount that grows to your FIRE number by retirement age without another dollar saved.
- Barista FIRE Calculator: How much you need invested when a part-time job covers part of your spending.
- FIRE Number: Yearly spending divided by a withdrawal rate: your number at 3%, 3.5%, 4% and 5%.
- How Much Do I Need to Retire: Spending less pensions, divided by a withdrawal rate, in today’s money and your retirement year’s.
- Early Retirement Calculator: Pick a retirement age and see whether you get there, the shortfall and the extra saving that closes it.
- Financial Independence Calculator: Years to financial independence from your savings rate alone, with the full table.
- Safe Withdrawal Rate Calculator: Your withdrawal rate, how long the money lasts at your real return, and what each rate allows.
- 4 Percent Rule Calculator: Yearly and monthly income from a portfolio at 4%, 3.5%, 3% and 5%, and the portfolio an income needs.
What makes it different
- Results as you type. No submit button, no page reload, no email.
- Shows its working. Each page states the formula and a worked example, and how we calculate lists them all.
- Real returns. Everything is in today’s money, so a FIRE number means what it says.
- Honest limits. Every page says what it leaves out: taxes, fees and the order of returns.
- Private. The sums run in your browser. Share links keep your numbers after the # sign, which is never sent to a server.
Independence
My FIRE Number is an independent website. It is not a bank, a broker or an adviser, holds no licence to give advice, and earns nothing from what you do with the results. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold anything.
How the site is paid for
The site shows ads from Google AdSense, placed below the calculators and never inside them, and none in print. Calculator and guide pages also carry one labelled box for StudyLah, a tuition service for students in Singapore. Our privacy policy explains how ads and cookies work.
